Eva's First Piano Recital
About Eva
Hi! Thank you for visiting Compositional Voices! This is an undergraduate research project with the Mellon Research Fellows at the Virginia Community College System and Virginia Commonwealth University.
I have been a classical pianist almost my entire life, and I have a passion for discovering marginalized voices in the Arts and Humanities.

This topic specifically called out to me as I had little to no exposure to women composers during the entirety of my music education. In early 2023, I happened to attend a concert in which the programming was 100% women composers and my mind was opened to all sorts of questions and possibilities...

How would my experience and connection to music differ had I been exposed to these musical perspectives as I was learning?
Why were these women not included in our classical canon?
Where can I find their music?

In Compositional Voices, I wanted to find an answer to my own questions. This project strives to be a collective of some of the many resources that help to highlight this disparity in representation and women who made waves in the world of classical music.
Behind the Name
In music, the term compositional voice refers to the style and uniqueness of the composer. When you listen to a piece by Mozart, it is undoubtedly Mozart because of his unique voice that bleeds through his music.
In this project, I aim to highlight the voices that are lost to the traditional canon.
Past Attitudes explores the historical boundaries and expectations that inhibited these women from publishing their works and/or receiving their deserved recognition. Current Statistics analyzes the current data on the representation of marginalized composers in today's orchestras. Present Change exhibits current programs that strive to minimize the disparity we see today and presents suggestions for our programming. Remarkable Women, highlights some of the amazing women that have made lasting but unknown marks in the world of music.
